First, we need to draw a swirl at the center of a piece of paper. If you want a rose bud along with a rose (optional), draw a smaller swirl upward to the first swirl. Make sure you keep some space around both of them. If you would like to draw color rose, you still should draw it in black and white at the beginning just to practice. Besides, the use of color darkness can be easily learned this way too.

Now, add few petals to the main rose and the bud (if you started with 2 swirl at step 1 and want a rose bud). In this example we added 3 petals per rose. But remember to keep those lines short because they will go down to meet bottom row of petals. At this point you can darken some lines, top area to create shade. Keep the drawing area free of dust and touch.

In step 3, we will draw more petals and add those top lines with bottom row petals. You can follow our drawing and practice the structure of a rose or use you own imagination (following is better at the beginning stage). Since we drew both a full rose and Rose bud, you will be able to see how different they are in sense of petal formation. There are often dip in the middle of a petal, sometimes it turns over out. After we will add sepals to the bud on the top, some leaves for both Rose and Rose bud. This is almost finishing of the basic Rose drawing. Now it is matter of darkening some lines and provide it a better finishing.
